Bill of lading

The carrier’s document listing what is on a vehicle, who it is from and where it is going.

Why it matters operationally

It is the legal record of a shipment and the thing a driver hands over on arrival. Receiving is checked against it, and a discrepancy noted on the bill of lading at the point of delivery is a claim; the same discrepancy noticed afterwards usually is not.
